September 11

Mark Bingham grave

Of all the images and sounds I remember from September 11, 2001, one I will never forget was the impromptu flowers and candles memorial at 18th and Castro in San Francisco, where strangers gathered to do something to remember a man – Mark Bingham –  from the community who had suddenly become a hero, by fighting back against the terrorists who hijacked Flight 93.

Nine years later, the person I was most worried about that morning, Wayne Hoffman – because he lives in the West Village, so close to the WTC – is coming to visit me in a couple of hours. So grateful.
